How much does the NZeTA cost in New Zealand?

Since 2019, international travellers wishing to visit New Zealand have been required to have an electronic travel authorisation (NZeTA) to enter the country. Many of you are wondering about this new administrative procedure, its cost and the conditions to be met to obtain this essential authorisation.

Here's all the information you need to know about the NZeTA, its price and the steps you need to follow to apply online without difficulty. So get your plane tickets and passport ready, we'll explain everything!

What is the NZeTA electronic travel authorisation?

The NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) is an electronic authorisation that allows citizens from certain countries to travel to New Zealand for tourism, transit or short family visits. It was introduced by the New Zealand authorities to strengthen the country's security and facilitate border controls.

This permit is valid for a period of two years from the date of issue and allows multiple visits to New Zealand of up to 3 months each. So with a valid NZeTA, you don't need to apply for a visa every time you want to visit New Zealand.

Who should apply for an NZeTA electronic travel authorisation?

Nationals of the several dozen visa-exempt countries for New Zealand must apply for a NZeTA before departure. These countries include the United States, Canada, Australia and European Union member states, including France and Belgium. People transiting through New Zealand en route to another destination must also obtain this authorisation online.

Exceptions:

  • New Zealand and Australian citizens are exempt from the requirement to present an NZeTA when entering New Zealand.
  • Holders of a valid visa to New Zealand do not need to request an electronic travel authorisation.

How do I apply online for an NZeTA electronic travel authorisation?

To obtain your NZeTA, you must apply online on the official website of the New Zealand government dedicated to this process or via a private agency accustomed to these procedures. Here are the main steps to follow:

  1. Complete the application form with your personal details, contact details, passport information and travel history.
  2. Validate the form, checking that all the information provided is correct and complete.
  3. Pay the fee for processing the electronic travel authorisation request (see below for more information on the price).
  4. Receive a reply to your application by e-mail within 72 hours. In most cases, authorisation is granted quickly, but there may be delays if additional checks are required by the authorities.

Once you have received your NZeTA, it will be automatically linked to your passport. This means that you do not need to print a copy of the authorisation to travel to New Zealand, but we still recommend it.

How much does it cost to apply for a NZeTA electronic travel authorisation?

The cost of applying for NZeTA varies according to the application method chosen:

  • If you apply online via the official New Zealand government website, the consular fee is NZD 23 (12 €) for applicants using a computer or tablet, and NZD 17 (9 €) for those using the mobile application official.
  • Some private service providers also offer to help you obtain your electronic travel authorisation, for an additional fee.

In addition to the application fee, all travellers must also pay a tourist tax called the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). This tax is intended to fund tourism infrastructure and environmental protection in New Zealand. The cost of the IVL is 35 NZD (19 €) and must be paid when applying for electronic travel authorisation.

Can I change or cancel my NZeTA electronic travel authorisation request?

Once you have submitted your NZeTA and paid the relevant fees, it is generally not possible to amend or cancel your application (this is possible in the case of minor errors). However, if you discover an error in the information provided or if you need to make changes to your application, we advise you to contact the New Zealand authorities as soon as possible.

The NZeTA electronic travel authorisation is a quick and easy way for nationals of many countries to travel to New Zealand. Don't hesitate to prepare your application in advance and check the eligibility requirements to make the most of your stay in this magnificent country.
